In this blog post, I’d like to share about three homegrown startups with huge potential for success (in my opinion). In any business, the key “make or break” factors that determine whether it will survive the initial stages are good leadership, vision, people, and relevance (aka solving real problems). I have the privilege of personally knowing the people behind these companies, and the reasons they made it on my list are because they tick off all the factors above.
I’ve had the pleasure of working with Derek (the founder and CEO) when WOBB first started, and it’s inspiring to see it grow to what it is today. Derek had a clear goal in mind, which is to position WOBB is the job portal for Gen-Ys, and a singular focus towards achieving his vision. The company is built around being people-centric. They go through considerable effort to understand how Gen-Y job seekers consume information, and their motivations when considering their career options. This is reflected by their portal — highlighting companies’ cultures via videos, delivering information in bite-sizes, and simplifying the entire recruitment process with chats, virtual interviews and more. WOBB has truly changed the narrative around talent acquisition for contemporary organisations who wish to show that they value who they hire. “Why should I hire you” has turned into “this is why you should work here” — creating a better company-employee fit.
Sycarda officially went live in January 2018 with the goal of transforming the retail landscape by giving control back to business owners. This startup is about solving real problems for brick and mortar retailers — collating data into easy-to-understand reports for retailers. Through a user-friendly dashboard, retailers are able to have near real-time intelligence in just a couple of clicks to find out which outlets are performing well, and what items are selling fast to make better business decisions. This real-time monitoring also acts as a secondary audit system to address pilferage. The best part is that their app is platform independent. Its easy plug-and-play system can be installed effortlessly into most POS systems with minimal disruption to operations. I believe Sycarda has a huge potential to grow as their system is cost-effective, secure and scalable.
Yellow Porter is basically a godsend to avid online shoppers in Malaysia. They help ship in items from almost anywhere in the world at affordable shipping rates. Shoppers have the option of sending their purchases to Yellow Porter’s warehouse in the country they’re purchasing items from, and choose their preferred shipment release based on time and budget. They can optimise their shipping by getting Yellow Porter to consolidate and repack their purchases at no extra cost. On the other hand, frequent travellers can sign up to be a Porter and earn while they travel by portering items back from their holiday destinations. The team behind this startup is experienced in logistics, and passionate about what they do. I’ve been using their service for about 8 months, and it’s impeccable. Yellow Porter enabled me to save on shipping, and avoid all the unnecessary hassle. The best part is that I now get to purchase items from the US or UK that usually do not ship to Malaysia.
